One of the first places to start noticing ageing is around the mouth
Ageing around the mouth tends to be due to volume loss in our mid face, our cheek fat descending and also the loss of collagen and elastin in the skin. People tend to notice heavier nose to mouth lines (AKA nasolabial folds) and also mouth to chin lines (AKA marionette lines).
Nasolabial folds
Nasolabial folds are the indentation lines that run from our nose to the out corner of our mouth. As we age these lines can get deep and give the face a tired and sagging expression. They can also alter the balance between the upper and lower face. By using dermal filler, we can soften the folds giving the face a more youthful and fresher appearance. We may also recommend some cheek filler to lift the midface and improve them further.
Marionette lines
Marionette lines are the vertical lines that run from the corner of our mouth to our chin. We hear a lot of patients tell us that these lines make them look sad, angry or cross. Again, these lines are caused by volume loss in the midface and loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, the lines can make your face look saggy. By using dermal filler, we can turn the frown upside by supporting the corners of the mouth, and using special technique to soften the line. Again, we may recommend addressing the cause of the marionette lines and this tends to be by replacing the volume in the mid face.
