Gummy Smile
A gummy smile (AKA excessive gingival display) is when you show an excessive amount of gum when smiling, which can make some patients self-conscious about smiling in public.
According to the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports (IJSCR) a smile is classed as ‘gummy’ when there is more that 2mm of gum on show when smiling, it is very common affecting 10 – 29% of the population, mainly women. There are a number of causes of a gummy smile including altered eruption of teeth during childhood, downward movement of upper teeth, excessive growth of the upper jaw bone or due to a short or over active upper lip muscle, which causes the lip to lift upward when smiling.
After an assessment, if we feel that your gummy smile is caused due to a short, or over active upper lip muscle then we can place some anti-wrinkle injections in the muscle to reduce the gum show when you smile. Sometimes, we need to use this treatment in combination with some lip filler for the best results.
If we feel that it is a dental problem, then we can recommend a fantastic Dentist who can assess and correct any dental problems.
Sad smile
We have a particular muscle called our depressor angular oris muscle that is responsible for expressing sadness, as we age this muscle gets tighter and it pulls down the corners of our mouth, making us look sad even when we’re not. By placing anti-wrinkle injections into the muscle, we can reduce the pull and help to elevate the corners of the mouth. For optimal results, sometimes we do this treatment in combination with dermal filler.
Lip flip
A lip flip involves places anti-wrinkle injections into the muscle above the lip to prevent it from disappearing when you smile, it creates the illusion of a fuller lip. It’s a great treatment for someone that wants a fuller lip but isn’t ready to try lip filler. That said, for the piece de resistance sometimes the use of anti-wrinkle injection and dermal filler together is needed to create a perfect, natural looking pout.
Lip lines
Ageing causes contraction of the muscle of the big round muscle that sits around our mouth (orbicularis oris muscle), as we get older the tightening of the muscle has a ‘purse string’ effect on our lips that contributes to the fine lines and wrinkles s we get around our mouth. By using anti-wrinkle injections, we can partially relax the muscle to help soften the lines and wrinkles. It also acts as prevention too. For people that have deeper lines, we may also need to use some dermal filler. Whatever we need to do though, we guarantee it will look natural.
Chin
As we age, the muscle in the chin starts to contract which causes a dimple effect on the chin, the use of anti-ageing injections in the chin will lead to a smoother more youthful appearance.
FAQ's
Over time and repetitive muscle movement causes lines and wrinkles to be seen on the skin, anti-wrinkle injections reduce the muscles’ ability to contract, allowing the skin to relax and reducing the severity of the lines. In some cases, where fine lines are visible and with repeated treatments over a period of time, we can completely eradicate these lines.
No, depending on your treatment it may feel uncomfortable though, the needles we use are very fine so the sensation is minimal. If you are particularly sensitive and therefore nervous, please ask for some topical anaesthetic cream which we can apply prior to the treatment.
Results from anti-wrinkle treatments are usually seen within 2 -3 days with full results taking 14 days, results generally last 3 – 4 months depending on the area that is treated and the individual. However, after repeated retreatments the interval between treatments can become longer, meaning less visits.
the treatment itself takes about 10 minutes to complete.
You can resume life as normal after anti-wrinkle injections, we simply advise not to attend the gym for 48 hours after treatment and no saunas, steam rooms or sunbeds for 2 weeks.
Bruising and slight swelling of the treatment area are uncommon but can happen, there may be other risks which we will discuss with you in your consultation.
Not all lines and wrinkles are caused by muscle movement, some are caused by decrease in quality of skin and/or volume loss in the face. With these types of lines and wrinkle, anti-wrinkle injections may not be the solution. You may need dermal fillers, Profhilo or skin treatments. Don’t worry though, we will assess you during a consultation and advise on what treatment is best for you.
